Commercialisation: delivering tools, germplasm and cultivars to industry

   

The Molecular Plant Breeding CRC (an unincorporated body) has established a corporate structure to facilitate the commercial adoption of technologies and inventions developed by its participants.

All intellectual property (IP) the CRC decides to protect (via patents and other methods) is owned by the company 'Molecular Plant Breeding Nominees Ltd', which holds it in trust for the participants.

An operating company, 'Molecular Plant Breeding Pty Ltd', acts as agent for the CRC to facilitate commercialisation of Centre IP via licence agreements and other contractual arrangements.

The corporate structure is designed to help the Molecular Plant Breeding CRC to achieve its mission and objectives.

Objectives
  • Protect and manage MPBCRC IP in line with strategic objectives
  • Effectively commercialise MPBCRC products, technologies and services
  • Negotiate commercial arrangements to facilitate industry adoption of new technologies
  • Establish commercial deals resulting in the delivery of MPBCRC germplasm and varieties to industry
  • Assess the viability of a service facility/capability for genetic transformation and genotyping to support molecular breeding programs; implement if viable

Outcome

Effective implementation and dissemination of MPBCRC technologies and products in the market place for the benefit of the Australian cereal and pasture industries.

  • Commercialisation plan
  • Capability in IP protection and commercialisation
  • IP commercialised. IP from research programs protected where appropriate and made available, through various commercial arrangements, to industry participants
  • MPBCRC products delivered through cereal and pasture germplasm and varieties
  • Service in transformation and genotyping to support breeding programs, if found to be viable
