Program 3: Markers and genetic solutions

Program Leader: Dr Mike Francki

Aims

  • Understand the genetic basis of key agronomic traits for the development of molecular markers
  • Identify markers linked to traits for effective use in molecular breeding
  • Develop improved strategies for effective molecular marker implementation
  • Develop improved germplasm using molecular marker technologies
Outcome

Improved genetic knowledge underpinning competitive Australian cereal industries. Breeding organisations will develop varieties faster and more effectively than before by using new technologies developed by MPBCRC. Improved varieties developed by these breeding organisations will benefit the cereal industries through greater and more stable productivity, reduced costs and more competitive products in the market place.

Outputs
  • Improved genetic understanding of inheritance of traits, diversity of germplasm and pathogen variation
  • Molecular markers for key target traits
  • New germplasm using MPBCRC technologies and capabilities for further use by breeding organisations.
