Get into Genes
The Molecular Plant Breeding CRC's Education Program, in association with the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics, provides a series of workshops for high school students called 'Get into Genes'.
Get into Genes is an interactive biotechnology education program that highlights the latest technologies and techniques used in molecular plant breeding programs. Get into Genes has been developed especially for secondary school students and teachers. Each workshop has curriculum links and is well aligned to SACE Stage 2 Biology and VCE Biology Units 3 and 4.

What does it involve?
- Introduction: An animated Powerpoint presentation covering the fundamentals of DNA and the way it is used in molecular plant breeding programs
- Four hands-on workstations investigating conventional plant breeding; DNA extraction; gel electrophoresis; restriction enzymes / molecular markers.
- Conclusion: An animated Powerpoint presentation summarising new technologies and their applications.
- Complimentary teacher notes and class room activities.
Who is it for?
- Get into Genes can be tailored to suit students from Years 9-12, studying science, agriculture or biology.
Where is it located?
- The Plant Genomics Centre at the University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus, Hartley Grove, Urrbrae.
- The Victorian AgriBiosciences Centre, La Trobe University Campus, Bundoora, Victoria.
- Workshops are available to rural schools depending on availability.
When is it available?
- Adelaide: Wednesdays and Thursdays
- Melbourne: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
- Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours
